Free Flu Shots Extended!
The free flu shot program at participating pharmacies will be extended through March 15. The program
is for employees and their covered family members in COVA Care and COVA HDHP. Plan members may
continue to use the list of participating pharmacies at

their shots from

As of 1/1/08, Dominion Dental Services USA, Inc. is Kaiser's new dental administrator.
There is no change to your covered dental benefits for your existing Second Level
POS Dental Plan. Look for a letter from Kaiser in the coming weeks outlining the
change. Also included will be an FAQ and a 2008 schedule of fees.

Non-Exempt Employees Can Choose Leave or Pay for Their Overtime Hours

faculty officially began on Monday, June 25. The converted balances and

Governor Kaine's 4/27/07 email grants 8 hours of recognition leave. All
salaried employees at George Mason (i.e. anyone who accrues annual leave) will
be able to take this special recognition leave between May 3 and June 30, 2007.
It will be in eligible faculty and staff leave balances by May 3 as a separate
item called "Special Recognition Leave."

Town Hall Meeting Scheduled Regarding Virginia Tech Tragedy
We invite all faculty and staff to attend a special town hall session regarding
the tragic events of last Monday at Viriginia Tech. Questions can be asked of representatives

University Administration, and Human Resources. This event will be held on Tuesday, April 24

Mason's Commuter Choice Programs and Telework Programs Recognized Again!
Mason was among 72 colleges and universities considered to be the best workplaces for commuters
because of the transportation services and programs sponsored by the the university. The list marks
the first time the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation
have judged higher education facilities for attempts to improve air quality, save energy and reduce
traffic congestion. Mason's commuter programs and telework policies were considered outstanding
benefits packages that save money, reduce parking demand, and improve the quality of life for

New Background Check Policy in Effect
Mason's new criminal background check policy goes into effect this month. The
primary focus of the policy is to protect the campus community by conducting
background investigations on newly hired employees in selected positions. In
addition, the policy also provides guidance on the criteria for determining when
positions require background checks.
HR/Payroll plans to use the month of March as a transitional period. The policy and supporting procedures will be fully implemented by the end of the month.

New Location for Classified Staff Orientation
Beginning Tuesday, February 7, 2006, classified staff orientation will be held from 9:00-4:00 every other Tuesday at the Mason Enterprise Center, 4031 University Drive, Room 100 (enter the building on the University Drive side). The new location has ample free parking available adjacent to the building. A complimentary lunch will still be provided for orientation attendees at Ciao Hall. Participants will be driven to and from SUB II via a Mason van.

The Virginia Prepaid Education Program
The Virginia Prepaid Education Program (VPEP) is an Internal Revenue Code Section 529 qualified tuition program. VPEP enables parents, grandparents, and others to prepay college tuition and mandatory fees at community colleges, four-year universities, or a combination of the two.
VPEP pays full in-state undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for the normal full-time course load at any public college in Virginia. Benefits can also be used at Virginia private colleges, as well as at colleges and universities throughout the country. The program is open to children in the ninth grade or younger if either the child or the account owner is a resident of Virginia. The plan offers a variety of payment options and significant federal and state tax advantages. Did you know that you can even do it through payroll deduction?

Holiday Impact on Payroll and Paycheck Availability
The University will be closed from Friday, December 23rd through Monday, January 2 (inclusive). Two
paydays will occur during winter break -- one on Friday, December 23rd for biweekly/wages employees and
one on Friday, December 30th for semi-monthly employees. Checks for both biweekly and semi-monthly employees
will be available for pickup after the winter break on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Please consider signing up for direct deposit now (you can even do it online on

The recently updated Administrative/Professional Faculty Handbook is now available. The Handbook underwent a comprehensive updating and streamlining process. The review was conducted by a team of people from a number of university offices and overseen by the Provost's Office and Human Resources/Payroll. A draft version of the Handbook has been available on the HR Web site for faculty review and comment since late August and open meetings were held on all three campuses in September soliciting faculty input. While the entire process took nearly a year, we hope the new Handbook was worth the wait and that you find it user-friendly and helpful.

VRS Service Credit Purchase
Current eligible employees have only until June 30, 2004 to purchase service credit at 5% cost. And if you want to purchase through payroll deduction, the deadline is May 25, 2004. Beginning July 1, 2004 (or within 3 years of employment date, whichever is later),
purchase must be made in a lump-sum payment at a substantially higher
