Insurance

Insurance is a way to mitigate some of the risks faced in every day life and helps provide financial security and protection for you and your family. Salaried employees have access to a range of insurance products including:

Life Insurance

Group term life insurance is offered to all benefits eligible (full-time and part-time faculty, full-time classified, and part-time classified staff) at no cost. Mason pays the entire premium. The basic benefit is two times annual salary. There is also an accidental death and dismemberment provision of four times annual salary. It is an automatic benefit that begins at employment.

Long Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance refers to coverage for a wide range of personal care, health care and social services for people of all ages who can no longer care for themselves. It is available to full-time or part-time faculty, classified staff who work at least 20 hours per week, and retirees of the Commonwealth. Certain family members of these employees or retirees are also eligible. Long term care insurance is a component of the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP). An optional long term care insurance plan is available for purchase through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) to non-VSDP participants and as a supplemental policy for VSDP participants.

Long Term Disability Insurance

Long term disability insurance protects your income and your standard of living should you be disabled for an extended period due to either an accident or sickness. It is a component of the VSDP program and non-VSDP participants may purchase a policy through UNUM Long Term Disability.

Optional Insurance

The optional group term life insurance program gives you the opportunity to purchase additional insurance at favorable group rates for yourself and your family. This option is available to full-time and part- time faculty, full-time classified staff and part-time classified staff.
