The Human Resources & Payroll department provides many learning and professional development opportunities for all Mason employees. We hope you'll take a moment to explore the resources and tabs on the Learning pages to learn more about our offerings.
Classes offered may be part of a series such as the Customer Service Certificate Program, New SUPERvisor Series, or Experienced Supervisor Leadership Seminars, or they might be skills-based classes such as EPAF and eWork training.
Customized learning opportunities are also available for departments on campus on topics such as customer service, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, stress management, communication and relationship-building, and many others. Retreat facilitation is also available for departments on campus as well as assessments of learning needs. Administrative professionals new to the Mason community or who are looking to improve their skills are invited to join the Administrative Professional Certificate Program. Network with other administrative professionals, attend meetings of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, participate in 5 minute mentoring sessions, and enhance your skills with instructor-led classes. CommonHealth is the Commonwealth of Virginia's Employee Wellness Program. CommonHealth offers quarterly wellness programs, many of which are offered via an online video, making it easy for all state employees to participate. Check in often to see the current quarterly offering, and don't forget about CommonHealth's additional wellness programs, including Future Moms, Quit 4 Life, and fitness center discounts. The goal of the Customer Service Certificate Program is to provide Mason's faculty & staff members with opportunities to enhance and develop their customer service skills. To receive a certificate of completion for the program a participant must attend any six Customer Service Certificate Program sessions. To receive the Advanced Customer Service Certificate, a participant must complete the program and then attend an additional six customer service sessions. Those who fulfill the requirement will be awarded with the certificate at the Faculty & Staff Professional Development Recognition Ceremony held each spring.

The Experienced Supervisor Leadership Seminars (ESLS) offers advanced leadership training to Mason supervisors who have successfully completed the New SUPERvisor Series or who have more than 5 years of supervisory experience at Mason. Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day (FSED) is once per year. FSED is a chance for Mason faculty and staff to attend professional and personal development seminars, network with colleagues, participate in professional development workshops, and hear from keynote speakers on topics of local, regional, and national interest.
In this certificate program, HR liaisons will learn about their roles and responsibilities as a liaison, tools and resources,and how to apply the proper laws, policies and procedures to Mason's Hiring and Human Resource practices.
Our Learning and Professional Development team is available to help departments establish an intergenerational mentoring program, where mentor/mentee pairs meet to learn workplace skills, from technology to professional etiquette. In addition to the mentor/mentee pairings, three classes are offered.
The mission of Life Planning/Eldercare Services at George Mason University is to provide support services to the university community, including faculty and staff, as they seek to balance the responsibilities of work and caregiving of elder family members and also as they plan for their futures.
The MAC program is designed to provide a codified training experience to enhance and develop the Mason advising experience. This five-module training series is intended for new and existing advisors alike and will provide a cohesive curriculum centered around topics related to advising approaches, Mason policies and procedures, advising tools, university resources, developing your advising philosophy, and much more! Mason Faculty and Staff within five years of retirement are invited to attend the this day long seminar, offered each spring and fall, to gather resources and learn about timely and relevant topics. (Formerly the Pre-Retirement Seminar)
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to automate nominations and reference letters for applicants directly from the person giving the nomination or reference.
Performance Appraisals workshops are offered each autumn as employees prepare for yearly performance appraisal meetings.
Presented jointly by the Office of Human Resources & Payroll and the Office of Equity and Diversity Services, this one-hour training covers the steps in Mason's hiring process, including best practices for conducting the process legally and efficiently.
It is required that a minimum of one person from the each search committee has attended this training within the past two years, and we strongly recommend that all members of each committee attend the training.
