Compressed Schedules and the Holidays

If your faculty and staff are utilizing the compressed schedule flexible work option they may wonder how to handle the upcoming summer holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day). With supervisor approval, they can go off their compressed schedule for the week, work 8 hours each day, and take the 8 hours of holiday leave. (Please note: These examples are based upon a full-time schedule; it would be pro-rated for part-time). If they choose to stay on their compressed schedule and the holiday falls on a day when they would normally not work, when they complete their timesheet, enter 8 hours under comp time earned. They then have 8 hours of comp time that can be used, with supervisor approval, anytime during the 12 months after the holiday. If the holiday falls on a day when they would normally work, please remember that they receive 8 hours of holiday pay for the holiday. If they are on a 9 hour or 10 hour compressed daily schedule, they do have to account for the full amount of their work day on the holiday by working during that week or taking leave. If you or your faculty and staff have any questions, please call the Customer Service Center at 3.2600 and ask to speak to a member of the Life/Work Connections team.

During this time, you may enroll in a health plan and/or FSA, change your health plan, add or remove family members or waive state health coverage. Help Us Name the New Faculty/Staff Lounge

Have a catchy name idea for the new Faculty/Staff lounge in Fairfax? Located on the ground floor in the Johnson Center in the former Bistro, the lounge is open Monday-Friday, 7:00am -3:00pm. It’s a terrific space but needs a name, one that reflects its flexibility as a Faculty/Staff Lounge by day and event space by night! Several of you contributed ideas at the kick-off party on February 12 which are in consideration but we also wanted to invite participation from the broader community. Send your suggestions (one per person please to worklife@gmu.edu by March 31. Here are some naming guidelines to keep in mind: • Please be sensitive to the diverse campus constituency when considering honorary naming opportunities for historical figures or family names, and do not propose a name that realistically can never be changed given the nature of the individual being honored. Examples are Ronald Reagan Hall, or Martin Luther King Hall. • To avoid logistical issues, please do not suggest already existing names of roads, buildings and other major facilities. Deliveries, service and 911 responses would be problematic with duplication of an existing name. • Only an individual that is fully retired and no longer on the university’s payroll may be considered for honorary naming opportunities.

Take Your Child to Work Day: Share Your Working World With Someone Special

Thursday, April 24th is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. This annual event is sponsored by the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation. The theme this year is "Plant a Seed, Grow a Future." From the foundation website: "Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day, has inspired a future generation of girls and boys by helping bring them into the workplace to explore the many life choices they have.” While we won't be engaging in a formal university-wide programmed event, HR & Payroll encourages everyone to think about ways to bring the world of work into the lives of young people. The foundation website can help with some fun and thought provoking activities that you can engage in with the children in your lives. If you plan on holding an event on the 24th at a Mason location, please obtain a release from those parents/guardians who will be inviting children into the workplace. Please email us your event pictures at worklife@gmu.edu.
