2023 Salary Increase Guidance

Consistent with the latest DHRM guidance issued on May 17, 2023, Mason will be providing a 5% pay increase. The DHRM guidance is based on the 2022 biennium budget. As we have a limited window to implement the adjustments, the allocation plan is as follows:

  • Instructional/Research (I/R) and Administrative/Professional (A/P) faculty will receive a 2.5% across-the-board increase with a 2.5% pool for performance-based increases and other adjustments.
  • Classified staff will receive a 5% across-the-board increase; no template will be issued. In the coming year, we will work with the Commonwealth to propose performance-based increases for classified employees.

This salary increase implementation continues Mason’s transition to outcomes-based performance management. Faculty and staff hired by December 31, 2022 are required to have a performance evaluation with a contributor ("Developing" or higher) rating completed by May 31, 2023. Employees hired or rehired between January 1 and March 10, 2023 must have an interim evaluation with a contributor rating.

Salary spreadsheets will be available on May 22 and units will have until June 5 to make recommendations for the discretionary pools, with increases effective June 10 (August 25 for 9-month faculty).

All additional increases beyond the 5% are contingent on the final FY2024 Commonwealth budget. The timing for final budget approval remains uncertain, and the Commonwealth has not provided guidance on an additional increase up to 2% that was included in proposed House and Senate budgets. We will provide updates based on any changes or further guidance from the Commonwealth.

As part of this process, there will be no non-essential salary changes until the merit increases are implemented. Requests for exceptions should be addressed with your respective Senior Leadership Team member.

We appreciate all of your flexibility and partnership in this important effort. For more information, please review the 2023 Salary Increase FAQ.
