CommonHealth Weekly Wellnote: Healthy Connections

Did you know hanging out with others is actually good for your brain? When we connect with people, our brains release feel-good chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin. These help us feel happy and stay mentally sharp.

In fact, a study in the journal PLOS Medicine found that people with strong social ties had a better chance of staying mentally healthy as they got older. Talking, laughing, and spending time with others can improve memory, reduce stress, and even lower the risk of brain diseases like dementia. Even just chatting with coworkers or calling a friend makes a difference!

This week, try out these activities for healthy connections at work:

  • Swap a sit-down meeting for a short walk while you chat.
  • Eat lunch away from your desk. Invite someone to join you in the break room or outside.
  • Grab coffee together. Use a break to take a few minutes to enjoy coffee with a teammate.
  • Celebrate wins! Shoutout a coworker’s achievement- big or small!
