May is National Military Appreciation Month

May is National Military Appreciation Month. This annual observance is a time for us to show gratitude and support for current and former members of the United States Armed Forces. These celebrations date back to 1999, when Congress chose May to “ensure the nation was given a chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present” (Military.com).

Military Appreciation Month includes several special opportunities to celebrate servicemembers and their families, including Memorial Day (May 29, 2023), Armed Forces Day (May 20, 2023), and Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 12, 2023). In particular, Military Spouse Appreciation Day honors the support and sacrifices of military spouses, and raises awareness about the challenges they face – such as frequent moves and long periods of separation. Military Spouse Appreciation Day was formalized in 1984 by President Reagan.

Join the Mason community for a musical celebration of National Military Appreciation Month on Saturday, May 13 at 8 p.m. The Hylton Performing Arts Center will host an evening of powerful performances by active duty and Veteran servicemember ensembles and soloists. Visit the Hylton Center website for more information.
