Supervisory & Leadership Development
Supervisor Boot Camp provides Mason’s new supervisors with need-to-know information while connecting them to fellow supervisors. This program is offered virtually and in-person throughout the year (see below). Enrollment is open to Mason employees who supervise at least one direct report.
Agenda items include:
- Hiring and onboarding
- Payroll
- Benefits
- Performance management
- Employee relations
- Classification and compensation
- The ADA and creating an inclusive workplace
- Employee engagement, well-being, and flexible work
- Effective meetings
- Coaching and communication skills
This program is designed to provide essential information in a supportive cohort learning environment, with opportunities for participants to reflect, network, and learn from one another.
Program Structure
This program is offered three times a year in the following formats:
- Spring (virtual): 5 x 3-hour sessions over 10 weeks
- Summer (in person): 3 consecutive full days
- Fall (in person/hybrid): 5 x 3-hour sessions over 10 weeks

The Emerging Leaders Supervisor Series (ELSS) is a 15-month cohort program designed to provide support as you develop and practice new leadership skills with your team while deepening your understanding of Mason policies. The goals of ELSS are to support participants as they:
- Develop a leadership mindset
- Create and implement a vision for their own leadership and their team
- Lead a high-performing team
- Learn tools and strategies to grow their self-awareness, relationships, and communication skills, which will support the objectives above.
Topics covered over the course of the program include:
- Emotional intelligence
- StrengthsFinder
- Hiring and onboarding
- Classification and compensation
- Performance management
- Employee relations
- Crucial conversations
- Employee engagement
- The ADA, benefits, and absence management
- Coaching skills for supervisors
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)
- Change management
- Working through conflict
In addition to the curriculum, participants work with assigned workplace coaches to set goals related to their growth as a leader. Each participant will complete a developmental project and will have the opportunity to work with peers across the university to learn more about the institution and to build a network of fellow supervisors.

The DAP Program invites existing Academic Advisors to further build on their Mason advising experience. The five-module training series will provide a cohesive curriculum centered around topics related to advising approaches, university resources, current trends and tools, and more.
