Preventing Workplace Violence

George Mason University strives to provide employees, students, and visitors a safe place in which to work, study, and live. Mason takes a zero-tolerance approach to workplace violence. It can take many forms; some are obvious while others are subtler.

Reporting Procedures

All employees are expected to report suspicious or threatening behavior in accordance with University Policy Number 2208: Violence Prevention. Reporting procedures can be found on Mason's Violence Awareness and Prevention website.

Required Training

All university employees are required to participate in Civility and Violence Prevention Training within 90 days of hire.

This training is designed to help employees:

  • Identify concerning behaviors that are common precursors to violence or self-harm
  • Understand which behaviors must be reported to the institution in accordance with federal, state, and university regulations and policies
  • Know how to report observed or potential acts of violence and crimes to the university so that appropriate interventions can be applied if necessary
  • Be familiar with the resources and support available to those who experience or observe violence on campus.
