Revision to State Hiring Policy
On May 30, 2023, the Governor announced the elimination of degree requirements and preferences for 90 percent of state classified positions. Effective July 1, 2023, Virginia’s hiring policy for classified positions will be modified to increase opportunities for all qualified job seekers. The “Preferred Requirements” provision in the current policy will be replaced by “Additional Considerations.” Additional considerations include supplemental knowledge, skills, and abilities that may enhance successful job performance. This policy change aims to engage the “hidden workforce,” or skilled and experienced workers who are often overlooked in candidate pools.
Positions will be reviewed by HR’s Classification and Compensation team prior to posting to identify any educational qualifications required by law, regulation, or accrediting body. Job postings for positions that have no regulatory degree requirement will no longer include such requirements or preferences. This policy applies to classified staff only; hiring processes for A/P and I/R faculty are not affected at this time.
