Show Your Gratitude: Celebrate Employee Appreciation Day on March 6
Employee Appreciation Day (March 6, 2026) offers a dedicated moment to pause and recognize the people who make George Mason University thrive. Appreciation is most impactful when it’s intentional, timely, and authentic.
Below are simple, effective ways supervisors and colleagues can show appreciation and help foster a positive, supportive workplace culture.
Simple Ways to Show Appreciation
Whether through a grand gesture or a simple “thank you,” there are many meaningful ways to express gratitude to your team and peers. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Personalized Thank You Notes and Zoom Backgrounds: A handwritten note or a personalized email recognizing specific achievements can make a big impact. Check out the Recognition and Appreciation Toolkit for card and Zoom templates!
- Quality Time: Treat team members to coffee, lunch, or snacks as a way to say thank you. Take time together for team photos using the free Polaroid Booth website.
- Public Recognition: Highlight outstanding faculty and staff during a team meeting, in a department newsletter, or on social media, assuming they are comfortable with those platforms.
- Professional Development Opportunities: Recognize faculty and staff not just for what they’ve done, but for who they’re becoming. Encourage participation in learning opportunities. Offer stretch assignments aligned with their Strengths and career goals. Celebrate progress, not just outcomes.
- Flexibility: Supervisors could offer flexible scheduling to recognize hard work or submit recognition leave if contributions warrant.
- Small Tokens of Appreciation: Branded George Mason gear, gift cards, or a simple treat can make someone’s day.
Appreciation Through Connection
Supervisors who build strong connections within teams foster a sense of belonging and appreciation. Consider these activities to enhance team cohesion:
- Listening Sessions – Schedule brief, open-agenda meetings to listen to faculty and staff ideas and concerns.
- Cultural Sharing – Host a team meeting where members share favorite recipes, traditions, books, or travel experiences to celebrate unity and inclusion.
- Inclusive Team Events – Plan inclusive events, either in-person or virtual, to encourage team bonding and ensure all team members feel valued.
Make It Personal
The most meaningful appreciation is specific and tailored to the individual. Recognize faculty and staff in ways that align with their preferences—some may appreciate public praise, while others might value a one-on-one conversation. Taking the time to understand what makes each employee feel valued strengthens relationships and team morale.
While Employee Appreciation Day is a great reminder, recognition should be a year-round effort.
Employee Appreciation Day is the perfect opportunity to recognize the dedication of our faculty and staff. Let’s show our George Mason faculty and staff just how much they are valued!
