Ann M. Garner, MA, PCC


Ann has been working in the field of career development for over 25 years in both government and in higher education. Her clients have included entry-level to midcareer employees as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Ann’s coaching expertise is grounded in positive psychology, strengths, and career development principles. She uses these principles to help her clients identify their strengths, and leverage them as they work to achieve their goals.

Coaching Approach and Style

 

Ann’s coaching approach is to meet clients where they are. Each client possesses a unique identity, strengths, and experiences. Her style is one of exploration and questioning in order to build trust and empathy with each client, and support them as they explore their strengths and challenges. Her style is to “walk with them” as they engage in self-discovery and identify opportunities for growth and goal achievement.

Relevant Experience

 

Ann has worked for 15 years in the federal government supporting the career development aspirations of entry-level to mid-career professionals. In her work with the government, she collaborated with individuals and teams to improve their understanding of individual and team strengths, and to facilitate improved communication and workflow. She also worked with individuals seeking a career transition, lateral moves as well as promotions.

In higher education, Ann has held multiple positions in the career centers at George Mason University, George Washington University, and Johns Hopkins University. In these roles, she has worked with students who are exploring their first careers out of college, contemporary students who are returning to school, seeking a career transition, and she has held leadership roles, supervising teams of three to twenty professionals. She currently holds the title of Manager of Industry Advising and Employer Development in Technology at University Career Services.

Ann has been a member of the coaching faculty of the National Association of Colleges and Employers since 2013. She teaches a variety of coaching courses from introductory courses on setting up a coaching practice through more advanced courses on administering and interpreting assessments for coaching clients.

Education

 

Ann received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of Virginia. She received her Master of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Counseling and Training from George Mason University. In addition, Ann completed the Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP), Leadership Coaching for Organizational Performance at George Mason University.

Ann’s certifications include Associate Certified Coach (ACC) through the International Coaching Federation, The Science of Well Being through Coursera and Yale University, Specialist Certificate in Strengths-Based Education through Gallup, Strong Interest Inventory through G/S Consultants, Inc and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator through Otto Kroeger Associates.
