New this year, Open Enrollment is held online on Cardinal, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s new online portal. As we are transitioning to this new platform, you may be experiencing issues, which are detailed below. We recognize that this has been frustrating. Please know that we are committed to helping you complete your Open Enrollment needs accurately.
Information in Cardinal
Please be aware that Mason only utilizes Cardinal for health insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), and premium reward information.
While your other information (listed below) may be incorrect in Cardinal, all health insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), and premium reward information should be correct.
Mason does not use Cardinal as our official data tracking system. Patriot Web is your official Mason record of information.
Please do not use Cardinal to update any information except for health insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), and premium reward information. We have been informed by the Commonwealth that the incorrect data (listed below) in Cardinal will only be fixed if we utilize the system to process payroll, which Mason as well as most higher education institutions do not. The incorrect data (listed below) does not affect your official record or ability to make Open Enrollment changes and updates.
Using Cardinal During Open Enrollment

- Medicare status
Pay Period Costs
The pay period costs are incorrect. The pay period costs shown in Cardinal are actually the monthly costs and should reflect the amounts shown in your Spotlight on your Benefits.
Flexible Spending Account Worksheet
The Flexible Spending Account worksheet does not work correctly – please disregard this calculator. If you are signing up for the Flexible Spending Accounts, you will put down the annual pledge that is effective July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023.
Life Events
The Life Event tab should not be used to correct information. This Life Events tab is for initiating a Qualifying Mid-Year Event (such as marriage, divorce, adoption, birth) to complete plan changes. Please reach out to benefits@gmu.edu to determine whether you meet the requirements for a Qualifying Mid-Year Event.
