Gallup Success Story: The College of Humanities and Social Sciences

In response to the 2022 Gallup Faculty and Staff Experience (FSE) survey, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) took decisive action to amplify employee engagement. Under the visionary leadership of Dean Ann Ardis, the CHSS Staff and A/P Faculty Advisory Council emerged as the driving force behind this endeavor.

Their mission? To unravel insights hidden within survey responses and infuse the college with newfound vitality. Teaming up with HR’s Faculty and Staff Engagement Team, they crafted a roadmap for action spanning 2023-2024. Their objectives? To bolster job satisfaction, combat burnout, and enhance recognition.

In the fall of 2023, the Council conducted a tailored Gallup pulse survey to inform decision-making and benchmark against the 2022 Gallup survey data. Hungry for qualitative feedback, the Council enlisted HR to facilitate focus groups, delving deeper into the nuances of employee experiences.

As March 2024 approaches, anticipation brews for the CHSS Classified Staff and A/P Faculty Town Hall—an event set to distill collective insights, survey analyses, and strategic action planning. This town hall promises a collaborative dialogue on charting the path forward.

Looking ahead, the Advisory Council eagerly awaits the 2024 Gallup Faculty and Staff Experience Survey results, ready to glean further insights into areas of growth and strength. Their journey has equipped them with invaluable lessons, encapsulated in their advice to future survey navigators:

  • Avoid making assumptions about the data. Asking questions to gain insights and understanding.
  • Embrace transparency by openly communicating the results.
  • Stay agile; be ready to pivot and implement changes as needed. Gathering data and failing to address it is detrimental to morale.
  • Foster inclusivity by involving employees at all organizational levels. Employees alone, or leadership alone, cannot drive change. Sustainable change requires a collaborative partnership, including university partners.

Through their unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at George Mason University champions a culture of employee engagement and continual evolution.
