Celebrating Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day, a valuable opportunity to honor the achievements and the significance of their role in shaping our past, present, and future.

The origins of Women’s History Month can be traced back to the early 20th century when the suffragist movement gained momentum in the United States.  In 1981, Congress passed a resolution designating the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week, aligning with International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, has its roots in the early 20th-century labor movements. The Day emerged as a platform for advocating women’s rights and equality which gained global significance. As recognition grew, the week-long observance of Women’s History Week evolved into a month, with March officially designated as Women’s History Month in 1987.

This year's theme focuses on Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. As we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8, let us collectively celebrate the contributions women have made throughout history and continue to make today.

In honor of this month, many of Mason’s organizations have planned events in celebration. Here are some events to check out around campus.
