Disability Insurance

What is Disability Insurance?

Disability insurance protects your income and your standard of living should you become unable to work. Disability coverage at Mason depends on which retirement plan you are enrolled in. Find your retirement plan below to learn more.

Virginia Retirement System

Most faculty and classified staff who are participating in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) are automatically enrolled in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP). Among other components, VSDP includes short-term and long-term disability.

Please visit the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP) page for more information.

Optional Retirement Plan

Faculty who elected the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) are automatically enrolled in a long-term disability plan through the Standard. After a 180 day waiting period, this benefit replaces 50% of your income up to a maximum of $6,000 per month. Mason pays the entire premium. Faculty may use leave to continue receiving pay during the waiting period.

This benefit went into effect July 1, 2017. Please see the Standard FAQ and the Certificate of Insurance for more details about this plan.
